RMR & Metabolic Testing Sydney

RMR metabolic testing in Alexandria, Sydney

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) testing measures, rather than estimates, the calories your body burns at rest. Know your real numbers before you plan a cut, a bulk, or a season of training.

What an RMR test measures

An RMR test uses indirect calorimetry: you breathe into a mouthpiece while resting quietly, and the device measures the oxygen you use and the carbon dioxide you produce. From that, it calculates the calories your body burns at rest, before any training, digestion or daily movement is added on top.

Most nutrition plans start from a formula that estimates this number from your age, height, weight and sex. An RMR test replaces that estimate with a direct measurement of your own metabolism, which is often meaningfully different from the formula, especially for athletes.

  • Athletes planning a structured weight cut or a bulk
  • Anyone whose weight isn’t responding to their current nutrition plan

3

Results walk-through

Your Accredited Sports Dietitian explains your number in the same appointment and what it means for your plan.

What the number means and how we use it

Your RMR sets the floor: the energy your body needs before training, movement or digestion are added. From there, your dietitian builds in your training load and sets intake targets from a measurement rather than a guess. If body composition also matters to your goal, we’ll often review your RMR alongside a DEXA scan.

Take it further

RMR tells you what your body burns at rest. Pair it with a DEXA scan and you get the other half of the picture too: what your body is made of.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is RMR testing?
Indirect calorimetry is considered the gold-standard way to measure resting energy expenditure, and is significantly more accurate for most people than a formula-based estimate, which can be off by a wide margin for athletes in particular.
How often should I retest?
There is no fixed schedule. Most clients retest around the same point as their initial test, after completing a weight cut, or once they have seen solid weight loss progress, so the new number reflects where they are at.
Can I do this on the same day as a DEXA scan?
Yes. That is exactly what our Pro Assessment combines: RMR and DEXA together in the same visit.
Is RMR testing covered by private health insurance?
A rebate may be available depending on your private health fund and level of cover. Ask your dietitian for a receipt with the item number to claim.
How long does the appointment take?
The test itself takes around 20 minutes, plus a short rest period beforehand and a results walk-through with your dietitian afterwards.
